Chapter 06½ · The Human
You deal with one person.
Not a call centre.
That's me, aged eight months, already plotting my first round at Royal Ashdown. Mum said the rabbit ears were non-negotiable.
Fast-forward thirty-nine years. I founded The Sussex Golfer in 2014 after twenty-two years as a member at Royal Ashdown Forest and four years running ops for an American tour group that I eventually bought out. I've played every course on our short-list at least a hundred times. I know which starter will shuffle your group forward if you're polite, and which will not.
When you email, I reply. When you call, I answer, or one of the three people who work with me does. We don't have a call centre because we don't need one. We run forty tours a year, maximum, and I'm on the ground for every single one.
That is why groups come back. That is why Medinah, Winged Foot and three of the top ten US hedge funds put us in their phones and not their bookmarks. If you're the sort of person who wants a named human on the other end of this transaction, you're in the right place. A more dignified photograph is available on request.
